Oct 10. Letter to Father from Springfield, Vermont. First letter in a series on the one year anniversary of his war time experiences in France. He begins with the evening of Oct. 9, 1918 when the regiment was near Montfaucou in the Argonne for four days waiting for orders; his duties were to keep contact with brigade headquarters in the rear and regimental headquarters up front. Received orders to go to the front, talks about the terrain and getting lost before finding location they were familiar with; came across dead Germans along the way. End of letter reminisces about war, discusses situation involving soldiers who returned home and how many thought citizens would go out of their way for them; mentions reading article in Saturday Evening Post about returning soldier; states he is now “up in the hills” hopeful of the future and makes mention of Alice and the Rogers.
