These records document the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance—often shortened to Great Plains IDEA—a collaboration of about twenty universities in the Plains region. Based out of Kansas State University, the group provides fully online graduate programs across several universities. Materials range from 1994 to 2015 and include meeting minutes, itineraries, board member information, education initiatives, and annual meeting information.

Additionally, there are web archives from 2001 to 2024. Bruce A. Adams family papers, 1891-2003

Abstract Or Scope

Bruce A. Adams Family Papers include genealogical and biographical information, educational records, military records, personal correspondence, and numerous photographs of Kansas natives Bruce A. Adams (KSU Class of 1969), George Earl Adams Jr. (KSU Class of 1948), George Earl Adams Sr., and their families. Of particular interest are World War II documents and photographs of George E. Adams Jr. who served as a reconnaissance pilot in Europe in 1944-45. The 31-year distinguished military career of K-State ROTC graduate Brigadier General Bruce Adams is well represented in the collection by a wide range of documents including three large photo albums that reflect in detail General Adams’ education, military training, military service, and personal life. The collection can be of interest to researchers whose scholarship focuses on twentieth-century American history, Kansans in the military, descendants of Seneca County, New York, and Atchison County, Kansas.

Society for Military History records, 1933-2012

Abstract Or Scope

The Society for Military History records (1933-2006) consists primarily of administrative and journal-related correspondence, organizational planning memoranda, and internal officer level reports. The original general arrangement of the records has been retained wherever possible. The majority of the collection is related to the preparation for annual conferences and the publishing of the organization's quarterly journal. The collection is organized into seven series: 1) Historic Papers, 2) Administrative Records, 3) Subject Files, 4) Journal Publishing Records, 5) Financial Records, 6) Printed Material, 7) Photographs. More detailed summaries of each series follow the scope and content section.

Originating as collaboration between the army's publications/historical research office workers and several Washington, D.C. area archivists, the organization, originally called the American Military History Foundation, was formed in an attempt to supplement the military's primary resource-poor collection in preparation to fight future wars. In time, the organization gravitated towards the scholarly study of American war fighting capabilities and public policy. Eventually, the organization grew into a multi-faceted society of scholars, military personnel, archivists, and military history enthusiasts, encompassing a dual foreign and domestic orientation, which encouraged a veritable kaleidoscope of traditional and non-traditional subject fields. Hence, this collection spans the history of the organization's different incarnations chronologically and by subject. These periods of change are reflected in their changes in name. They are the American Military History Foundation (AMHF), 1933-1939, the American Military Institute (AMI), 1939-1990, and the Society for Military History (SMH), 1990-present, respectively.

Their main publication, frequently referred to as "the journal" in documentation, has also changed names several times. They are The Journal of the American Military History Foundation (1937-1939/1940), Military Affairs (1939/1940-1988), and The Journal of Military History (1988-present), respectively.

The records also reflect the organization's involvement with other scholarly organizations, most notably the American Historical Association (AHA), the Organization of American Historians (OAH) and the United States Commission on Military History (USCMH), as well as their affiliation and later absorption of the veterans/historians association the Order of the Indian Wars (OIW).

Consequently, the strength of the collection lies with documentation concerning both the shifting needs of the general military, academic community, and the general public as well as the increased diversification of the military historiographic landscape due to the organization's non-profit efforts in both the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The Historic Papers (1933-1972) series consists of (1) box of documentation, relating to the original goals of the organization, several early projects, certificates of incorporation, constitutions and by-laws, reports outlining the duties of officers, copyright information, taxes, early organizational correspondence between founding members, and agreements made with other organizations regarding membership and journal publishing, including the Order of the Indian Wars (OIW) and Kansas State University (KSU). Also found in the series are a few 1935 articles, published through Army Ordinance, which provided a mission statement, the creation of an organization beyond the Army History Division and served as the starting point for the organization's publishing arm.

The Administrative Records (1933-2007) series consists of (79) boxes of correspondence and reports circulated between the officers of presidential administrations, individual organizational members, the executive directors, and the boards of trustees. These files include such issues as membership drives, conference planning, journal publication evaluations, officer reports, and general correspondence. The papers covering the early years focus on daily administrative activities within a narrow scope of weeks and months. The papers covering the latter years of the organization span both daily material and long-range planning by the organization's officers. Many notable archivists and historians served as officers in the organization, including Trevor Dupuy, William Foote, B.F. Cooling, Russell Weigley, K. Jack Bauer, Alan Millett, Robert Berlin, Donald Bittner, Timothy Nenninger, Edward Coffman, and Edwin Simmons. Much of the correspondence and officer reports also shed light on several key events in the organization's history, including a 1940s attempted transformation of the journal towards a National Geographic-type format by Dallas Irving, the 1950s and 1960s performance of an all-volunteer editorial staff managed by Victor Gondos, Trevor Dupuy's late 1950 attempts to develop AMI into an increasingly scholarly organization, periodic evaluations of Kansas State University's journal publishing performance, the forces behind the creation of the Moncado Awards and the AMI/SMH Book Award, the search for a replacement publisher for the journal prior to the 1988 completion of Kansas State University 's contract, and reports outlining the sequence of fiscal/membership crises which nearly dissolved the organization. Similarly, the SMH papers of Donald Bittner collected in this series outline the entire process of conference creation from thematic conception to methodological process and management to the post-conference publication of several papers in the Marine Corps University's "Perspectives on Warfighting." Correspondence pertaining to several other noted military historians can also be found in this series, including material by Martin Blumenson, Victor Gondos, Brian Linn, Forest Pogue, Craig Symonds, Dennis Showalter, Robin Higham, Robert Berlin, and Bruce Catton.

The Subject Files (1908-1993) series consists of (11) boxes, containing a wide assortment of document-types from the organization's holdings according to topic and chronology. These files, originally retained separately from the general collection, were frequently utilized by different administrations as reference material for numerous policy initiatives described in other series. The set of records relating to the Order of Indian Wars contain both historic oral histories of the Plaines Wars and membership lists as a recruitment resource, which were incorporated into the organization when the Order of the Indian Wars merged with AMHF/AMI between 1938 and 1947. Other files contain biographical summaries of influential early members and journal contributors. Several files concern the drafts, correspondence, and memoranda on the reorganization of organization. Another collects the correspondence, submitted entries and judges description's for AMI's 1939 "Historical Fire Arms Contest." Still others include the efforts of several public relations to increase membership, membership paraphernalia, contractual agreements with other organizations, reports concerning the location and disposition of the AMI Library and Archives, federal tax-related forms, the history behind the Moncado Award, and one of the only successful 1960s Civil War commemorative events, the AMI Civil War Centennial Celebration.

The Journal Publishing Records (1933-1980) series consists of (13) boxes of correspondence, memoranda, reports, and papers submitted for publication by the journal. It covers the publication's many changes in name, editorial direction and format from The Journal of the American Military History Foundation (1937-1939) to The Journal of the American Military Institute (1939-1941) to Military Affairs (1941-1988), and, most recently, to The Journal of Military History (1989-present). The contents range from submitted manuscripts, such as "The United States Army Troops in China, 1912-1937" by Charles W. Thomas III (circa 1933), to editorial board-level material. Although originating in 1937 as the Journal of the American Military History Foundation, the majority of this collection was gathered together in the 1950s by Victor Gondos and served as the staff's institutional memory during his tenure as editor of Military Affairs. Researchers interested in business history and publishing will find the editor's daily correspondence particularly valuable, detailing the journal's on-going relationship with printers, advertisers, readers, reviewers, and prospective contributors. Another valuable resource includes the Cold War era's editorial board reports, which recorded membership/subscriber growth as well as managed printing venues, advertisers, subscribing institutions, and book reviewers. Other interesting subjects covered by the files include editor Dallas Irving's attempt to widen the journal's readership, the near dissolution of the journal in the late 1940s upon the resignation of the volunteer editor, the brief period in which the publication was maintained by the United States Army Office of the Chief of Military History, the 1949 attempt to rescue the publication by then-Columbia University President Dwight Eisenhower, the 1968 transition of publishing operations from a volunteer staff in the Washington, D.C. area to a paid professional publishing staff comprising Kansas State University's History and English departments and headed by Robin Higham, and a 1998 joint project with the United States Commission on Military History to publish an issue of Reveue Internationale D'Histoire Militair on the relationship between the United States Constitution and America's armed forces.

The Financial Records (1934-1999) series consists of (17) boxes of accounting records, receipts, officer reports, trustees meeting minutes, membership lists, and correspondence by subject and chronology. The first section of the records includes membership lists spanning the early years of the organization and the Cold War era AMI, detailing the status of active members, dues accrued, patrons, and honorary members as well as groupings of members by geographic region. Some individuals listed as members include George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Charles Summerall, Samuel Bemis, William D. Campell, Hoffman Nickerson, Hilario Moncado, Walter Lippmann, Milton Skelly, Bernard Brodie, Stephen Ambrose, and Harold Deutsch. The second section covers the accounting records of the early organization to the onset of the Second World War in the form of bank statements, bound ledgers, deposit slips, paid bills, and check books. The remainder of the collection covers the Treasurer and the Treasurer-Secretary's reports to the organization's officers, meeting minutes with the Board of Trustees, correspondence concerning member's status, investments, and bills to be paid. The financial arrangements made for joint conferences/seminars with other organizations are also interesting, including the American Historical Association and the Organization of American Historians, arrangements made for the organization's own annual conferences, and the early AMI Treasurer's financial reports concerning membership shortfalls after World War II and the Korean War.

The Printed Material series collects in (3) boxes maps, posters, and illustrations as well as copies of conference programs, newsletters, and some newspaper clippings. The first section of the series contains several black and white illustrations, printed in England, outlining the evolution of weaponry from edged weapons and armor to firearms, graphics describing officer ranks, two World War II era posters ("Careless Talk" and "5th War Loan"), maps of the United States, the world, and a handful of World War I battlefield actions. The second section holds several programs for SMH Annual Meeting events, membership directories for both the AMI and SMH for the years 1981, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2000, and 2002, respectively, and an eighteen year run of the Headquarters Gazette (1990-2008). The final section of the series includes newspaper clippings, featuring the obituaries of notable organizational members. A complete collection of Journal of Military History issues from 1994-2006 has been separated from the papers, catalogued, and shelved in the department.

The Photographs (1940-2008) series collects in (1) box the miscellaneous printed images and portraits of the organization's members. Included in the series are portraits of several early organizational presidents and officers, black and white pictures of the 1968 Victor Gondos Testimonial Dinner, a photo of Victor Gondos at his desk, an assortment of images depicting naval vessels, aircraft, military personnel, and combat actions collected for potential supplements to issues of Military Affairs, as well as amateur pictures taken of SMH awards recipients and panel discussions held at miscellaneous annual conferences.

The majority of this collection is a compilation of Motor Voters’ correspondence to and from state and federal agencies, individual consumers, auto industry magnates, and other consumer and safety groups. Also included is an audiovisual series which contains news and press conferences as well as general TV coverage of Motor Voters’ accomplishments and goals.

This collection contains writings, notes, Department of History information, personal material, photographs, and miscellaneous material accumulated by Robin Higham.
The writings include drafts, historical papers, oversize papers, and manuscripts, specifically Deciphered: The Phaistos Disk and the Southern Minoan Maritime World by Robin Higham, A Guide to the Sources of British Military History by Robin Higham, Handbook on World War I by Robin Higham, 100 Years of Air Power and Aviation by Robin Higham, and Diary of a Disaster by Robin Higham.
Higham’s notes pertain to personal and professional subjects, especially publication and revision.
The Department of History information contains course material, especially syllabi and final exams/prompts, course planning, class schedules, class directories, correspondence, memoranda, minutes, certificates, and Higham operations manuals.
The personal material mostly contains correspondence and notes, but also has some information regarding Higham’s children. There are records regarding Manhattan High School and its PTA.
The photographs largely contain images of pilots, planes, other aircraft, watercraft, soldiers, colleagues, family, and other personal and professional subjects. Additionally, there are maps, and portraits. A small amount of this material is oversize.
The miscellaneous records include memoranda from the American Military Institute, Faculty Senate records, Kennedy Library Information, and awards and certificates.

Dean of Libraries records

Abstract Or Scope

The Dean Brice G. Hobrock collection encompasses the major growth of the KSU Library system during his tenure as Dean of Libraries at Kansas State. The collection spans from 1982 to 2005 and is 20 cubic feet.
The collection includes a large amount of correspondence from Hobrock to Jean Darbyshire, Karen Cole, Linda Beckwith, Bob Kreger, Jean McDonald, and Kathy Fronce from 1994 to 2000; the correspondence and memorandum papers mainly concern important library and KSU issues. In addition, this collection also contains a substantial amount of information regarding the renovation of Farrell library and the construction of the Hale additions in the mid-1990s, including building moves, funding, architectural and engineering papers, and building history.
This series also includes the Dean's legacy project, strategic planning, library administrative papers, the United States Agricultural Information Network(USAIN), Library endowments, and external relations with the KSU Foundation, regional universities. and China, library budget 1986-2005, and ARL annual salary reviews and statistics. The administrative papers include acquisitions, annual reports, Big 12 correspondence, the board of regents correspondence, budget info and planning, capital improvement plans, Council of directors and Deans of libraries, collection management, faculty evaluations, tenure and promotion, Friends of the Library, minority student concerns, correspondence with the state of Kansas, library issues and planning, multicultural affairs, the National Agricultural Library(NAL), a task force on issues facing women faculty, and virtual library development

Frank Caldwell Hershberger papers, 1905-1965

Abstract Or Scope

The papers were assembled by Colonel Frank Caldwell Hershberger (1888-1965) over a long international career as a veterinary medicine specialist. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs and postcards gathered into three scrapbooks dating from 1908 to circa 1955. These albums cover various locations in Europe and Africa, as well as Diamond, Wyoming, and the Philippines. Additional loose photographs date from circa 1905 and document his time at the University of Missouri, Camp Marfa (Texas), Fort Monroe (Virginia), Fort Riley (Kansas), Fort Sill (Oklahoma), and Fort Mills (Corregidor, Philippines). Photographs include military officers, military polo teams, training cavalry horses, and the process of transporting horses via troopship. Augmenting the visual materials are articles, diplomatic papers, typescripts, some correspondence and a diary related to Hershberger's work for the Chinese government (1914-1918). One typescript details the history of the Port Veterinarian for the Port of Embarkation, New York, 1921-1945. The collection also includes the Legion of Merit medal, Legionnaire degree, which is given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.

Album of family photographs associated with sign and house painter Harvey Honnold of Olathe, Kansas. Photographs are the products of professional studios in Kansas, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee. John M. Lilley papers, 1914-1980

Abstract Or Scope

John M. Lilley (1939-) served as Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University from 1976 to 1980. During that period, he compiled research for a book on American composer Gail Thompson Kubik. He also developed files pertaining to K-State's New Student Transition Program and Ad Hoc Committee on Enrollment and Orientation.
Most records pertain to Lilley's Kubik research and include audio materials and recording information, sheet music, and photocopies of articles and scrapbooks. Administrative records associated with Lilley's role as Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences document enrollment programming during the late 1970s.

This collection is composed of literary productions and photographs from between 1964-1971. The included literary production records are made up of correspondence (1964), notes, editor's notes, early drafts, fourth draft for A Choice of Weapons by Gordon Parks, as well as the original manuscript for Whispers of Intimate Things by Gordon Parks (1971). Robert O. Blunk, Jr. papers, 1923-2011

Abstract Or Scope

This collection holds the papers of Robert O. Blunk, Jr. from 1923-2011 and includes some material in regards to his late wife, Katherine J. Blackwood Blunk. Box 1 of the collection begins with generic information regarding Blunk including his biographical information, certificates and similar materials, World War II Memorabilia, correspondence excluding World War II, and printed materials. Certificates and awards, printed materials, and correspondence from Katherine Blunk are also available. The remainder of the folders in box 1 pertain to community art and Blunk’s own sketches and published artwork. Notable materials include the Save the Arches campaign and the Chanute/Wright Memorial plans, photos, and correspondence. Box 2 categorically contains letters and envelopes pertaining to or from World War II, maintained in chronological order from 1939-1971 (primary 1942-1945). Box 3 holds many sketchbooks from Blunk’s early career (~1950s) as well as materials from the scrapbook held in box 6 along with other artifacts from Blunk’s career. More sketchbooks and free sketches can be found in box 4, in addition to oversize memorabilia from the Chanute/Wright Memorial. Box 5 contains two bound scrapbooks from the Viking House and boxes 7 and 8 contain material intended to go to the Beach Museum.

This collection includes papers, publications, editorials and news clippings from Dr. David Ray Mackey's distinguished career in collegiate education (speech, communications, and broadcasting) and commercial radio broadcasting. Papers include syllabi, academic papers, transcripts, press releases, and correspondence from his time at Northwestern University, the University of Texas, Pennsylvania State University, and Boston University. Publications include his 1956 doctoral dissertation, his 1951 book, Drama on the Air, a professional text on radio dramatizations, two issues of Today's Speech (1957), and assorted articles. Editorials include a sample of opinion pieces aired on KWHK (Hutchinson, Kansas) from 1962-1970. Robert Simonsen Photograph Collection, 1955-2016

Abstract Or Scope

The Robert Simonsen Photograph Collection contains autographed photographs divided into 4 series: U. S. Political, U. S. Military, U. S. Protectorates, and International Leaders. The collection is split fairly evenly between the United States and International photographs, with the majority of the U. S. photographs residing in the Political series. Many of the autographs include an inscription and/or an accompanying letter. Unidentified individuals are first within each section.
The United States Political series is divided into three subseries: States, Ambassadors, and Federal Agencies. The States are arranged alphabetically with the individuals sorted alphabetically by name under their political division: House of Representatives, Senate, and State Officials. This is followed by United States Ambassadors arranged alphabetically within various year ranges, and United States Federal Agencies sorted alphabetically by specific department then arranged alphabetically by name.
The United States Military series is divided into four subseries by branch: Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines. Within each branch the names are alphabetized under rank. Some ranks are entered multiple times under various year ranges.
The photographs in the United States Protectorates series are alphabetized under the specific place: Micronesia, Palau, Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Trust Territory of the Pacific, Guam, and Marshall Islands.
The International Leaders series is sorted alphabetically by country. Some countries have all the individuals sorted alphabetically within a single grouping, while other countries will further divide the photographs into political and military subgroups. For example, the photographs for Argentina are all grouped together, while Australia is broken into 14 subgroups.

The records of the Office of Student Activities and Services (OSAS) at Kansas State University span from 1946 to 2013. The office oversees student organziations on campus, including the Student Governing Association, and contents relate to the administration of student activities and services by the office, as well as Student Governing Association (SGA) records and information about student organizations.
SGA records include agendas, minutes, election information, and legislation and statutes of the student senate. Agendas include some years between 1998-1999 and 2003-2004. Minutes cover most years between 1946-1947 and 1996-1997. Election information is from 1989-1990 to 1992-1993. Legislation and statutes span from 1967-1968 to 2008-2009. Additional types of materials include reports, fine arts council annual reports, committee documentation, and budget and allocation records from some years between 1995-1996 and 2005-2006.
A small portion of the materials relate to student government efforts to save Nichols Gym between 1975 and 1984, and include correspondence, reports, a petition, flyers, clippings, and materials related to the Nichols Hall art competition. People frequently appearing in the collection include Greg Musil, Larry Weigel, Eric Bransby, and many faculty and administrators at the university.
OSAS records include the office newsletter, "Paper Money Plus," from 1972 to 1992, as well as reports, procedures and guidelines, and budget items from 2006 to 2012. Much of the latter content focuses on fiscal procedures, financial reports, and budget allocations for student organizations.
The largest series of records are student organization registration records, which are in alphabetical order. Included are names of officer, constitutions, bylaws, and similar types of information.

Ivy Fuller Olds papers, 1890-03-21 - ?

The boxes contain wonderful photographs that date from the early 1800s, a large amount of correspondence, personal papers, memorial records, scrapbook of her WWII work at Walter Reed Hospital, other scrapbooks, financial records, calendar appointment books, address files, post cards, journals, publications, information representing a variety of organizations; yearbooks; newspaper clippings, memorabilia, and some small objects. Some of the materials include items from other family members and her husband Garrett Olds. His military awards, medals, and some of his personal papers are included. There is no inventory for the collection.

The major subject areas include education; Kansas State University, Kansas State Alumni Assoc., other organizations, theatrical endeavors, family, military service, and more.

Biography
Ivy Ann Fuller was born in September 1894 in Barton County, Missouri. Her family moved to Manhattan, Kansas in 1902, settling on a farm in Ashland Township. They later moved into town, living in a home at 617 Poyntz. This became her lifelong family home until 1984.

Ivy graduated from Kansas State Agricultural College in 1913 earning a degree in Home Economics. Her college years were marked by her interest in the Panhellenic Council, journalism, where she was on the staff of the Kansas Aggie, forerunner of The Collegian; Delta Delta Delta Sorority, where she was charter member no. 6; and the performing arts. Throughout her life she was active in the sorority at the national level and in both Indianapolis, Indiana, and Manhattan, Kansas. She was also a devoted alumni of Kansas State University.

Ivy taught at Manhattan High School for 2 years. She then attended the Harvard school of physical education for two summers. While at Harvard, she was voted "prettiest girl on campus".

Ivy was a beautiful woman and won several movie queen contests. In 1917, she was crowned Movie Ball Queen in Kansas City. This led to a screen test in California. As a result, Ivy reportedly was cast in more than 20 silent films.

In late 1917 when the U.S. became involved in WWI, the Red Cross appealed to women to become trained as nurses to support the war effort. Ivy answered the call and attended nurses training at Vassar College. She had assignments at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, with the Surgeon General’s office, and later served as a physical therapist at Walter Reed Hospital. She left the Red Cross Service around June of 1920, toured out of Washington D.C. with a Chautauqua company, and became one of the founders of the Washington Theatre Production Company in 1920.
In 1920, census records show that she was living in Washington D.C. as a single woman employed in “goat service.” I am unclear as to what this is but I think it is a typo and should read government service. In 1921, Ivy accepted a position as director of the historical section of the American Legion, a newly created office with headquarters at Indianapolis. She was already a member of the legion because of her service as a nurse. Ivy was a member of the American Legion in Manhattan and was the only woman delegate from Kansas to the Legion’s national convention in 1921.

The 1930 census shows Ivy living in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was still single working as a teacher. It was there that she met Lt. Colonel Garrett W. Olds, a lawyer and a career Army officer, who had served in France in WWI. Ivy married Garrett Olds in August 1937 at St. Paul’s Church in Manhattan, Kansas. They lived in Indianapolis, Indiana where she continued to teach well into the 1940s.

Garrett Olds served in WWII and was a member of the Rainbow Division of the National Guard so he was probably required to have been gone some portion of 1938-1945, although I do not have a complete military record. It is likely the two were often separated. Ivy and Garrett were divorced in 1953. Mr. Olds retired from the army in February 1956 and died in 1964.

By 1950 Ivy had returned to Kansas to care for her ageing parents although she often visited her parents at the family home throughout her earlier years. The 1950 census also shows that Garrett Olds was not living with Ivy although according to neighbors he did visit. Ivy was no longer employed outside of the home.

In her later years, Ivy remained active. She was a life member of the Manhattan Civic Theatre. She supported the library, and both local and state historical societies as well as the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She was an avid fan and supporter of the Kansas State rowing team. She also donated 187 items of clothing and accessories to the Historic Textile and Costume Collection in the KSU Department of Clothing,Textiles, and Interior Design and was involved in the local community until her death at Wharton Manor Nursing Home in May of 1990. She was 95 years old and is remembered as a beautiful woman, an educator, actress, nurse, and a devoted alumni and community member.

The general purpose of the Faculty Senate within Kansas State University is to facilitate faculty participation in the establishment of university policies and in the formulation of procedures for their interpretation. For the policies to remain useful they are delegated to sub-committees established by the Faculty Senate, responsible for a certain set of procedures and policies and filtering it from the Senate to the faculty. The Faculty Senate Records collection contains minutes and agendas from most of these committees. Along with minutes and agendas, this collection contains course and curriculum changes from proposed or already existing courses. Lastly it also contains general office files from Faculty Senate and from prior Faculty Senate President, Jerry Freiman.

Thomas Cruise Palmer papers, 1913-2019

Abstract Or Scope

Photographs, correspondence, articles, news clippings, personal papers and other documents describing the life and career of Thomas Cruise Palmer (KSC, 1938), who from 1952 to 1977 served in various editorial positions with the Kansas City Star and Times, including ten years as executive editor. An advocate and supporter of K-State and its journalism program, Palmer was instrumental in acquiring the endowment establishing the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications. News articles, photographs and military records describe Palmer’s service in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, including his experience onboard the first Navy ship to enter Shanghai after the end of the war. Materials also include articles written by Palmer during his time at the Star, items related to his activities as a student and, later, a supporter of K-State, personal and family history-related documents and photographs with Robert Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Ginger Rogers and other notables.

Loren W. Elliott papers, 1927-1987

Abstract Or Scope

The Loren W. Elliott papers consist of documents pertaining to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity, and Phi Kappa Phi, during the time Elliott was a student at Kansas State Agricultural College in the late 1920s and 1930s. Included are Laboratory Outlines and Elliott's class notes for General Botany I, General Botany II, and Laboratory Experiments of Elementary Organic Chemistry. Elliott was also a member of the President's Club (1981-1982 and 1987). A vinyl record (33 1/2 rpm) titled "Purple Pride 1971-72" is included in the collection.

The Charles L. Marshall Sr. papers primarily document his involvement in promoting art in Kansas through his association with several art organizations in the state and at Kansas State University. Additional portions of the papers document examples of his artwork and touch on his time as an architect in the state.

Hunter, Francis David Farrell, Russell Thackrey, James McCain, Birger Sandzen (photocopies only), Charles Stroh, Don Louthian, Herschel C. Logan (photocopies only), Ward Lockwood, Charles B. Rogers, Bernard (Poco) Frazier (photocopies only), Zona Wheeler, Oscar Larmer, Bruce Reed, J. Cranston Heintzelman, Dorothy Barfoot, Mrs. Charles Sanderson, Priscilla Pastrick, Joy Jacobs, and Peggy Greene. The KSU Friends of Art series primarily covers the time period of 1982–1990. Correspondents include Mandy Doolittle, Jessica Reichman, and Charles Stroh. Also included are Friends of Art newsletters and an Executive Committee Report (1985–1986). The printed material (1950–1990) contains flyers, an invitation, and biographies of Evan Lindquist and Edward Starr.
The Kansas State Art Center series deals with the campaign for an art museum at KSU covering the years 1963 to 1991. It consists primarily of correspondence with Charles Stroh, Jon Wefald, Jerome Frieman, Gilbert E. Johnson, Mrs. John F. Helm, Russell Thackrey, John F. Helm, John E. Brink, Raymond Spilman, Kenneth M. Heywood, and Larry Weigel. It contains notes, a proposal for the art museum, minutes from the board of directors with a worksheet to augment the brochure A New Resource, art center foundation and committee meetings, an executive report, and art center fund report. Printed materials include newspaper clippings, a page from the K-Stater printer's copy of the flyer for KSU art center and foundation contributions, a copy of the flyer never mailed, and a suggested program for the proposed art center are contained in the printed material section. Several booklets were also included: Summary of Fund Raising Survey Report for Washburn, The Need for an Art Center at Kansas State University, and A New Resource at One of the Cultural Crossroads of Kansas.
The Kansas State Federation of Art series is the largest in the collection and covers the years 1940–1985. It deals with Marshall's time as trustee, president, and board member and extends up to the disbanding of the KSFA. It contains correspondence with J. Cranston Heintzelman, Robert W. Cooke, Winston A. Schmidt, Ronald L. Reid, Margaret Pelham Greenough, Oscar Larmer, Gordon Zahradnik, Sue Jean Boys, Dan F. Howard, Margaret Hammel, Don Smischny, Margo Kren, Mary Wing, Donna Foster, Zona Wheeler, and Daniel E. Bernard. This series also contains general information about the organization, by-laws, and two bank statements (1973 and 1976). Meetings, membership lists, bulletin of exhibits, and other exhibition information make up the rest of this series.
The Kansas Society of Artists series covers the time period of 1957 to 1960. It deals with the Society and Marshall's involvement. It contains membership lists, minutes, and correspondence with J. Cranston Heintzelman, John F. Helm, Jr., and William Dickerson.
The Zona Wheeler series is made up of photocopies of her files covering the years 1943 to 1978. It contains correspondence from Ronald L. Reid, Judy Reid, Evelyn A. De Graw, J. Cranston Heintzelman, and John F. Helm, Jr. It also contains exhibition lists.
Additionally, there is one envelope of negatives documenting some of Marshall's time as a K-State student in the 1920s. Included are social situations and Roughneck Days.
Three folders include materials mostly from Charles L. Marshall, Sr., including copies and original sketches and artwork, clippings, exhibit publications, property deed, 1987 booklet Let’s Start from Scratch and 1979 booklet Thumbnail’s by Marshall, death certificate, funeral services program, KSC engineers’ open house button, KSC Air Force ROTC patch, 1954 Royal Purple, and photos. The latter three items are from when Charles L. Marshall, Jr., attended K-State. Photos include the elder in a 1923 ROTC uniform, as child and adult, Ahearn Field House construction, 1951 basketball game, and on project sites.

Thomas Brooks papers, 1911-1979

Abstract Or Scope

The Thomas Brooks Collection/Colston E. Warne Biography reflects the efforts of Brooks to write a biography on consumer leader, Colston Warne. A professor of Family Economics at Amherst College for 40 years, Warne played an important part in organizing professionals in the consumer affairs field. He was known for his many roles in the consumer movement, including: president of Consumers Union, development of the international consumer movement, serving on numerous governmental committees and advisory boards, and helping to introduce the consumers point of view into economic and political public policy decisions.
The Administrative Files are related to Brooks' management of the biography project, and they are arranged in four subseries. The first subseries from this file contains correspondence between Brooks and other individuals. This includes letters between Brooks and people such as; Warne, individuals who knew Warne, and publishers. The second subseries is financial documents and includes budget statements and store requisitions for the project. The third subseries is miscellaneous files of articles and papers written by Warne. The fourth subseries is the Warne biography research proposal written by Brooks and submitted to the College of Human Resources, Southern Illinois University.
The Research Files series, organized into seven subseries, contains research material on Warne collected by Brooks. The first subseries is Amherst College, 1931-1960. Because Warne spent most of his career at Amherst, this subseries, contains pertinent information about Warne and his profession. The second subseries is articles on Colston E. Warne. These are specific articles written by others about Warne and they include: "Colston Estey Warne: Mr. Consumer", "Dr. Warne is Honored by Unitarian Society", "Advertising: Study Stirs Debate on Values", "Consumer Groups Going International". The third subseries contains biographical notes taken by Brooks while researching Warne. The fourth subseries is organizations. They include: The American Association of University Women, The American Council on Consumer Interests, and Consumers' Union. The fifth subseries contains information about people. Included are: Ralph Nader, Celia Warne, and Colston Warne. The sixth subseries is subjects and includes files on advertising, consumers in the market, cooperatives, labor, the loyalty check, and speeches/statements. The final subseries is the Warne family tree.
In the third series are Warne's personal files consisting of four subseries. The first subseries is activities and associations. They include: Consumer Advisory Committee, Council of Economic Advisors to the President of the U.S., 1947-1951; Consumers Research, Advisory Board, 1929-1935; Consumers' Union, President and member, Board of Directors, 1936-1979; People's Lobby (Washington D.C.), President, 1934-1936, Honorary Vice President, 1941, Board of Directors, 1936-1950. The second subseries is Warne's diary. This is Warne's personal diary for the years 1911-1918. The third subseries is personal papers of Warne's. Included are his address books, a pamphlet written by him, and correspondence. The fourth subseries is organizations and includes: consumer cooperatives, the consumer movement, Consumers Research, People's Lobby, and other miscellaneous organizations. Two dissertations comprise, Literary Works. The first one is titled, "An Historical Analysis of the Growth of the National Consumer Movement in the United States from 1947 to 1967", by Jeanine Gilmartin. The second is titled, "The Consumer Movement in the Sixties", by David R. Case.
The fourth series contains oral interviews Brooks conducted with Warne, and other persons related to his life. There are typed transcripts for the majority of the interviews recorded on cassette audio tapes. The tapes have been separated from the collection and stored in the Consumer Movement Archives Oral History Collection. Among the thirty-two people interviewed were: Senator Paul Douglas, Leland Gordon, Florence Mason, Margaret Warne Nelson, Barbara Warne Newell, Esther Peterson, Celia Warne Tower, Clint Warne, Colston Warne, and Francis Warne.
The fifthth series contains printed material relating to the consumer movement. The majority of the printed material is either written by Warne or written about Warne. Approximately one hundred photographs were removed from the papers and filed in the University Archives Photograph Collection. The photographs are organized in three groups: Ithaca High School year book of 1916; Warne's career involving consumer movement events; and photographs of Warne at Amherst College. Included among the second group are photographs of the Consumer Advisory Council of 1948 and of 1962, Warne's visit to Japan with the Consumer's Association in 1961, Warne's visit to India in 1969, President Kennedy, Frances Warne, Walter Wilcox, and Richard Morse.

Americans for Fairness in Lending records, 2000-2010

Abstract Or Scope

The Americans for Fairness in Lending (AFFIL) records (2000-2010) consists primarily of memos, reports, web data administration, research correspondence (emails and letters), artifacts, and publicity (print and electronic) generated by a non-profit organization (NPO) underwritten primally by large grants from the Beldon Russonello & Stewart, Ford, and the Annie Casey Foundation to advocate for changes in state and federal laws governing business lending practice.
The records, collected into seven boxes, have been arranged to reflect the organization's multifaceted public relations campaign against unfair lending practices in tandem with consumer state and national-level events, including the release of independent film documentaries, the rise of social media programs, the 2008 presidential election, the 2009 Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act and the 2010 passage of the Dodd-Frank Bill, which created the federal Consumer Protection Bureau.
The Administrative Files Series (2004-2010) consists of two boxes of correspondence (print and email), handbooks, grant applications, meeting minutes, letters of agreement, and employee notes relating to organizational growth. They are arranged in alphabetical order by subject. Some noteworthy items relating to the internal structure of the organization, including the "All About AFFIL" handbook, the search for outside funders, notes relating to conference calls with consumer movement experts, and the organization's strategic plan for the 2008 election cycle. Another key feature of this series includes AFFIL's agreements with the Ford Foundation, the public relations firm of Benesen Jansen Advertizing, the National Consumer Law Center, and Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) project agreements.
Finally, researchers of social media, such as Youtube and blogs, will also find several topics in this series of special interest, including the development of the organization's website, the tracking of web statistics, the creation of electronic contented targeting internet users, and the on-line outreach initiatives.
The Meetings Series (2005-2010) spans two boxes arranged in alphabetical order by subject and by date, containing correspondence, notes, and annotated research utilized in the planning and execution of discussions concerning different issues concerning the organization. The majority of the files in this series concern the formulation and execution of AFFIL's public interest policies.
Several folders relate to the division of administrative tasks and the formation of business policies for committee assignments, partners, contractors, consultants, the press, and the general consumer movement community, including AFFIL's general principles, field outreach strategy sessions as well as staff meetings and periodic discussions with the National Consumer Law Center. Other files contain documentation related to the organization's periodic updates to funders concerning their ongoing activities, including the Ford Foundation and the Annie Casey Foundation. Still, other files concern conversations between the organization and Magnolia Studios in trying to create a public relations campaign to promote AFFIL issues through the release of their documentary on American predatory lending business practices, Maxed Out.
Other sections of this series include files relating to conversations between employees and the Federal Reserve Board, whistle-blowers, lending victims, and members of the military. Finally, this series also collects material and advice provided in conversations with outside firms, such as Benesen Jensen, focus groups reviewing advertising campaigns, the National Council of La Raza, and web-based providers.
The Research Series encompasses two boxes of reports, newsletters, internet data, court documents, whistleblower, witness, and victim case files, government documents, and internally generated public relations campaign data.
Arranged in alphabetical order by date, these files comprise the heart of the collection, revealing the sources, data, and political focus of the Americans for Fairness in Lending. Some folders contain information generated by the United States government, including the Federal Reserve Board, National Usury Cap Legislation, S.500, 2009, and the California Reinvestment Act.
Other folders collect documents relating to different aspects of credit card and intermediary lending company operations, including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, medical debt, the Navy Federal Credit Union, the case files of a whistleblower, witnesses, and victims, Ritzen v Chase court files, and a brief history of the practice of usury. Still, other folders collect lending information generated by the entertainment industry, consumer groups, and noted AFFIL associates, including the television show Boston Legal, ACORN, AARP, the Legal Aid Society, the NAACP, the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, and the Consumer Federation of American.
Several folders also contain information collected by AFFIL contractors, including focus group data, Kansas district voting patterns, marketing statistics, and targeted population demographics. Finally, this series also contains accumulated consumer lessons from different sources on a wide variety of topics, including Christmas holiday tips, lending and collection abuse guides, mortgage advise, student loans, and payday provisions.
The Publicity Series spans three boxes, collecting the artifacts, posters, and media related to the organization's public relations campaigns. Several folders collect documents generated for Maxed Out Screenings, including fliers, questionnaires, house party lists. Other files hold fact cards, business cards, fliers, press kits, and reports, which AFFIL distributed at consumer conferences.
Some of the artifacts collected in this series also include promotional folders, hats, and visors. The strength of this series, however, remains the collection of DVD, CD, microcassette, VHS recordings of AFFIL videos and advocate interviews on several news magazine programs, including Nightline, Fox Business, and 60 Minutes. Finally, a number of small and large posters depicting lending and mortgage horror stories featured as part of AFFIL's on-going campaigns have been retained for preservation in this series. P. Abstract Or Scope

This collection is made up of documents created by the office of the provost and senior vice president at Kansas State University. Documents in the collection consist of a wide range of material from the office administrative files, class documents, department and dean files, program reviews, role and aspirations, strategic planning, university events, COCAO, president's staff, Board of Regents, Dean's Council, grievances, university awards, and vice provost papers. Some records document the interactions with other universities in the state of Kansas and universities nationally. The bulk of the materials are from the 1980s to 2010 with most of the other documents dating back to the 1970s.

College of Veterinary Medicine records, 1855 - 2014

Abstract Or Scope

This collection comprises material related to the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine between 1855-2014. This collection contains administrative records from this college, including handbooks and manuals, proposals and applications, various records, reports, publications, presentation materials, records related to international programs, material pertaining to campus and its buildings, and a film catalogue which describes some of the collection’s video material. It also contains recordings and transcripts of interviews, most of which featured alumni from the College of Veterinary Medicine for the history book “A Century of Excellence: Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine” by Howard H. Erickson and Ronnie G. Elmore. Drafts of this book are also present in this collection. Moreover, this collection contains yearbooks and scrapbooks, including auxiliaries and photo albums, from the college spanning nearly a century. There are also audio and video materials related to the College of Veterinary Medicine on cassette tapes, microcassette tapes, VHS tapes, CDs, and DVDs, and film reels which record college events, interviews, teaching aids, and virtual tours of the college. This collection includes class and faculty composites for the College of Veterinary Medicine spanning the majority of the 20th century, and even features a composite from the St. Joseph Veterinary College. These composites are either photographic negatives or oversize photographs.

Other photographs that can be found in this collection depict people, including faculty, staff, students, and other notable individuals. Photos of buildings, including diagrams and photos of buildings on the Kansas State campus and the Veterinary Medicine campus, as well. There are also photos of animals, which were either pets, farm animals, or lab animals, as well as the labs performed on these animals. Additionally, photographs of college events, miscellaneous photos, and oversize photos also contribute to this collection’s material.

Lastly, this collection features photographic negatives and photographic slides which depict people, like faculty, staff, students, exchange students, and Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association members. Also pictured are labs, lab equipment, and associated animals, which were often pets, farm animals, or wildlife/exotic animals. Locations within the Manhattan area (especially within the Kansas State University campus and the College of Veterinary Medicine Complex/Campus specifically) are also an important subject to this collection. Negatives of these locations feature buildings, layouts, maps, construction, maintenance, renovations, and damage to buildings. Formal, casual, recreational, donation-based, food-based, and sporting events related to the college can be found in this collection as well. Miscellaneous photo negatives and slides make up the remainder of the undeveloped photographic material in this collection.

Currin V. Shields papers, 1960-1984

Abstract Or Scope

The four boxes of Currin V. Shields papers are associated with his activities in the consumer movement from 1966-1984. They also reflect Marjorie Shields' involvement in consumer affairs, especially the Arizona Dairy Products Litigation that extended to 1986. Papers describing Shields' career as an educator and his political activities (he was the Democratic candidate for governor of Arizona in 1970) are not included in the collection.
The Shields papers are organized into four separate series thereby preserving, for the most part, the order in which they were maintained by Shields and received by the Consumer Movement Archives at KSU.
A few minor adjustments in the arrangement were made to facilitate labeling and access. For example, in the Arizona Consumers Council series, the financial documents and typed reports were separated into individual sub-series. In addition, groups of printed material were brought together in the fourth series. Currin Shields was a national figure in the consumer movement. He was president of the Arizona Consumers Council from 1969 to 1980 and the organizer of the Conference of Consumer Organizations in 1973. He directed the National Consumer Affairs Internship Program, National Consumer Symposium, and Consumer Affairs Seminar. His papers document his association with these organizations and the consumer issues both he and the groups addressed.
The first series, Arizona Consumers Council (1966-1984), is housed in two document boxes and comprises the largest series in the collection. It is divided into four subseries; correspondence, general files, financial documents, and reports. The items are in chronological order within each subseries. The correspondence and general files constitute all but three of the folders in this series. Dr. Shields maintained the ACC correspondence and general files in separate notebooks, although their contents are similar. The major difference between the two is the correspondence series contains Shields' individual letters and documents regarding the ACC and his activities, while the general files include correspondence, minutes, surveys, membership data, annual and board meeting documents, and miscellaneous material related to the affairs of the organization.
The general files can be described as the central office files for the ACC while Shields was president from 1969-1980. Both sub-series contain papers dealing with the major consumer issues the ACC was confronting including the following: consumer protection program for Arizona, consumer fraud, unit pricing regulations, energy and environment, public utility rates, milk and bread prices, food price-fixing, labeling, and dating of perishable foods, national meat boycotts, food sale tax, aging, group health plans, Arizona Consumers cooperative store, an anti-trust suit against bakeries, a price-fixing suit against Tuscon Cement Co., and bicycle safety.
The ACC correspondence contains letters between Shields and the following consumer leaders: Erma Angevine, Carol Tucker, Lee Richardson, Ester Peterson, and Edwin Palumbo; Arizona senators and representatives (Douglas S. Holsclaw, Helen Grace Carlson, David B. Stone, Manuel Pena, and Anna J. Cullinan); consumer groups in other states, state and local government officials, national organizations such as the Consumer Federation of American, and federal agencies including the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Federal Energy Administration, and Federal Trade Commission. The remaining ACC subseries contain financial documents for 1977-1978 and seven typed reports on consumer issues, 1972-1976.
The second series of the Shields papers, Arizona Dairy Products Litigation, contains four files of legal documents and correspondence regarding a class action suit against four major dairies for violation of antitrust laws (1974-1976; 1986-1987). The class action was a partial result of the bread and milk price surveys conducted by the Arizona Consumers Council in the 1970s. Currin and Marjorie Shields were plaintiffs in the case. The litigation continued after Dr. Shields' death and the files indicate Mrs. Shields's involvement, including settlements in favor of the plaintiffs.
Material associated with the Conference of Consumer Organizations (COCO) is contained in series three. It is stored in 21 folders and covers the years 1973-1975. The series was kept in its original order of three related sub-series; correspondence, general, and steering committee. The entire series reflects the formation and early years of COCO and Shields' direct involvement with establishing the organization and service as chairman. Related organizations represented in the COCO series include the National Symposium on Consumer Movement, numerous state consumer organizations, Consumer Federation of America, Consumers Union, Arizona Consumers Council, and National Consumers Congress. Individual correspondents include Colston E. Warne, Roy Kiesling, Patricia Van Betten, Lynn B. Jordan, William Fasse, Eileen Hoats, Janet Ann Hutchinson, Robert McEwen, William Pate, Helen E. Nelson, Ellen Zawel, Arline Mathews, Louis Meyer, and Henry E.K. Lee. COCO documents consist of by-laws, minutes, reports, membership data, financial statements, and correspondence.
The fourth series of the Shields' papers contains printed material divided into four sub-series as follows: Conference of Consumer Organizations, National Consumer Affairs Internship Program, National Symposium on Consumer Movement/National Consumer Symposium, and Consumer Affairs Seminar. The COCO sub-series contains two folders of its monthly newsletter, Intercom, for the years 1974-78.
The National Consumer Affairs Internship Program was initiated by Shields in 1975. Originally a joint project between COCO and the American Council on Consumer Interests. It was chartered as a separate non-profit educational corporation in the State of Arizona in 1978. The six folders (1975-1983) contain brochures, articles of incorporation, internship descriptions, application procedures, membership lists, and newsletters.
Printed items describing the National Symposium on the Consumer Movement (1973-1975)/ National Consumer Symposium (1976-1979) make up the third sub-series. This annual conference was directed by Shields as part of the Community Services Center, Division of Continuing Education, University of Arizona. The material consists of descriptions of the symposium, programs, and lists of speakers and registrants. The Consumer Affairs Seminar (4th sub-series) was also conducted by the Community Services Center at the University of Arizona. Each of the five seminars from 1976 to 1980 is described in a folder of printed material.

Jane Butel papers, 1956-2014

Abstract Or Scope

The collection was created by Jane Franz Butel during her college education and her career.
Series 1 is divided into two sub-series: Articles about Jane Butel and Articles by Jane Butel. Articles about Jane Butel include numerous newspaper and magazine articles ranging from 1976-2014, covering interviews with Jane Butel as well as reviews of her cookbooks and featured recipes. Included are articles from the LA Times, New York Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle, as well as travel magazines, ladies magazines, and cooking magazines. The March 1996 issue of Bon Appetit names Butel's cooking school as one of the top four in the world. Articles by Jane Butel include clippings from newspapers and magazines written by Jane Butel between 1976-2008, covering topics such as chili and the history of Mexican cuisine. Included are recipes and stories appearing in Cooking Light, Food and Wine, Los Angeles Times, First for Women, and several publications from New Mexico.
Series 2 includes undated documents relating to publishing, press releases, research, and publicity tours for three of Butel’s cookbooks, Chili Madness, Tex Mex, and Hotter than Hell, as well as her unpublished manuscript, The Efficient Kitchen.
Series 3 includes documents relating to cooking schools, many of which Butel hosted for private corporations as team building events. Microsoft, Southwest Airlines, Hewlett Packard, Firestone and the Carlyle group are among her clients.
Series 4 contains documents on Butel’s consulting for corporations. Companies include Grand Union, Del Taco, Sargento and many others. Most include background information on revenue for these companies.
Series 5 has limited documentation about JBA, Jane Butel Associates.
Series 6 has product information and promotions for her business, Pecos Valley Spice Co. Yearly reports, status updates and demographic reports for the company are among the documents.
Series 7 contains letters sent to Jane Butel from 1965-2009, including fan mail ("nice letters") and thank you cards from school attendants. Also included is correspondence to and from magazines, newspapers, publicity companies and television stations.
Series 8 documents the early years of Butel’s career. Her work for the Public Service Co. of New Mexico, resumes, and extensive consumer papers from GE and Con Edison are included as well as papers relating to her work as Vice President of Consumer Affair and Marketing at American Express.
Series 9 contains copies of Con Edison speeches about cooking. Woman of Achievement award, KSU Entrepreneurship award, as well as New Mexico Woman award are included along with an invitation to the 1969 Presidential Inauguration.
Series 10 has Butel's coursework for her journalism and reporting classes as a student at Kansas State University.
Series 11 chronicles meetings and conferences Butel attended as a guest or honored award winner.
Series 12 contains extensive documentation about Butel’s publicity tours, advertisements, book promotions for things such as her books, as well as cooking schools and JBA. Included are contact lists, press releases and schedules.
Series 13 includes papers relating to organizing, planning, distributing, producing, and financing Jane Butel’s cooking show, as well as television show scripts and outlines.
Series 14 contains correspondence and contracts with Jane Butel’s Southwest Kitchen television show sponsors. They include the American Dairy Association, A.G. Russell Knives and Vitamax.
Series 15 contains correspondences with potential sponsors for Jane Butel’s cooking show. They include Con Agra Foods, Inc., Eastman Kodak, Gallo of Sonoma, General Electric, Land of Lakes, Mrs. Dash, and Southwest Airlines.
Series 16 has approximately 2,400 photographs taken of and by Butel, mainly of her cooking school and participants. There are also publicity photos, personal photos, and food photos. Only a few photographs are dated. Most of the people in the photographs are unidentified.
Series 17 has over 100 tapes of Butel's cooking shows, television appearances and feature stories. Of note are appearances on Regis and Kathy Lee, Emeril and Friends, and the Today Show. Filming for Butel's cooking shows, including Jane Butel's Southwest Kitchen, took place in 1998-2000. The series ran for seven years nationally on PBS as well as a channel out of Denver and one out of Dallas. The cooking shows are recorded on Betacam SP tapes.

Don L. Good papers, 1924–2008

Abstract Or Scope

This collection documents the academic career of Don L. Good, noted livestock judge and head of the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry at Kansas State University (1966–1987). A wide range of materials are include from lantern slides to publications to journals documenting trips abroad, and date from 1923 to 2008. The collection has been divided into series based on material types.
The Artifact series includes certificates, awards, banners, business cards, and plaques.
The Audio-Visual series consists primarily of photographs and negatives documenting department activities (1924-1988), as well as photo albums and scrapbooks. Some of the activities highlighted are livestock shows and judging teams, Weber Hall, the U. S. Beef Symposium, and the 1950 International Team. Glass negatives and lantern slides have been relocated to allow for better preservation of fragile materials.
The Block and Bridle series (1940-2006) documents the student organization's activities and events such as their annual banquet and involvement in Little American Royal. Block and Bridle yearbooks from other universities are also included.
The Conference series (1959-2003) records Dr. Good's involvement in various professional activities such as contests, shows, sales, expos, state and county fairs, conventions, and forums. Some of the events included are Beef Cattle Efficiency Forum, 1984; Angus Forum: Century of Angus in the U.S.A., 1973; Hereford Association meeting, 1959; Beef Empire Live & Carcass Show, 1973; International Cattlemen's Expo, 1969, and Nebraska State Fair, 1980 and 1982.
The correspondence series (1954-1991) consists of fourteen items including individual correspondence and letters concerning tenure, academic credentials, the 17th Stockman's Dinner, and departmental print orders.
The International Meat and Livestock Program (IMLP) (1989-2001) consists of papers contributed by various countries, from Africa to Ukraine. Animal health, veterinary practices, beef production, meat processing, feed processing, herd management, genetics, and molecular biology are some of the topics covered.
The International Trips series covers travel to Nigeria, 1968-1969, Turkey, 1971, and England & Scotland, 1971.
The Judging series (1932-2003) focuses primarily on the livestock (1948-2003) and dairy (1969-1987) judging teams. Other topics include the Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest, the wool team, American Royal, Kansas State Fair, and judging in general.
The Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC) (1967-2001) contains organizational information including Articles of Incorporation, Board meetings, correspondence, minutes, agendas, memos, and financial records.
Printed material (1885-2006) contains university and departmental publications, as well as books and articles that reflect Dr. Good's professional interests. Included with this series are departmental policies and memos, faculty meeting minutes, and expansion plans. The two titles with the largest number of issues are the College of Agriculture Teaching Newsletter and Monday Morning Updates.
The Public Speaking series (1950-1998) contains speeches and public talks given at a variety of events from the Americal Royal to the Z-Bar Ranch, taking place across Kansas and various locations around the country.
The Saddle and Sirloin series (1970-2004) contains recommendations and biographies.
The Yearly Planners series (1968-1987) contains planners and/or calendars.
The Restricted series contains one box of Patton Farm records, undated.

Sports Information collection, 1931-2000

Abstract Or Scope

This collection includes K-State's Sports Information photography collection and team documents. The materials include documents and photos from a variety of sports, including baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, track, rowing, and wrestling. The photography collection includes coach and player portraits, along with competition and sideline photos. The document collection includes scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, team files, scorebooks, and game programs. The collection is sorted approximately by item type and grouped into series by sport. The photography collection is stored in flip-top boxes, while the majority of the documents are in cubic foot boxes. The approximate dates of the materials are 1931-2000.

Gerry L. Posler papers, 1904-2008

Abstract Or Scope

The bulk of this collection documents the academic career of Gerry L. Posler from 1965 to 2008 with materials that include his resume, awards, research and presentation notes, course materials, correspondence, and printed materials. Additionally, there are articles he authored and photographs of graduate students and department experiments, as well as research manuscripts from the early twentieth century. The collection also includes materials related to the creation of a departmental history edited by Gerry Posler and Gary Paulson in celebration of the department of Agronomy’s centennial in 2006. Posler collected, assembled, edited, and author several of the chapters in the publication titled “A Centennial History of the Department Agronomy, Kansas State University”. Additionally there are about 721 files (761MB), of digital files provided by Posler. The digital files include course materials, publication drafts, presentations, retirement biographical information, resumes, and photographs. These files have been kept in their original order.
