      General note

Jan 23 and 29. At sea, letter to Russell, his brother; tells him he had to go on watch, the first duty he has had since leaving port, and gives details of others having sea sickness but the pills Father gave him have allowed him to feel fine. Tells how they got together and sang camp songs and listened to a talk by the general who told about conditions in Europe and importance of alertness and discipline. Jan 29. At sea, continues writing to Russell in same letter as above, mentions they are to land tomorrow and that he has been on more watches, either two or four hours, nothing to see. A convoy of small boats arrived which are disappointing to him because he was expecting larger ships. He is looking forward to seeing England after being cooped up on this “freighter.”
