      Mar 9. Telegram sent to Father at 142 W. Fisher Ave., White Plains, NY notifying him that he is presently stationed at Camp Merritt, N.J. (1) [Oct 10 through Nov 11, series of 8 letters to his Father from Springfield, Vermont, giving detailed accounts of his days in Europe exactly one year earlier. Letters describe incidents in combat and topics include his reflections on German Kaiser Wilhelm II, trench construction and combat tactics, the mud, the poor state of field provisions, the 42nd Division’s attack lines, working for Colonel William Donovan, medic stretchers, artillery bombardment, gunfire, armored tanks, and his friendship with a fellow soldier, named Zip. He also relates stories involving his getting lost between the lines, his battalion being pulled back from the Cole de Chatillon position after an attack, and a soldier faking sickness to be pulled off the line. Last letter describes how they reached the Meuse River across from Sedan.]
